About Studio Dumbar/DEPT®

Jasper Scholma:
Jasper Scholma is the Sound Designer at Studio Dumbar/DEPT®. He has a Fine Arts degree from Academie Minerva and has since worked as a freelance artist and designer. At the studio he works on all projects that involve sound and is currently defining the role that sound can have in a graphic design context. Besides his work at the studio he has a producing and DJ career under the name ‘Former’ where he worked with the likes of Sevdaliza, Noisia and Machinedrum.

Elvin van Dalen:
Elvin van Dalen graduated as a Graphic Designer from Academie Minerva, Groningen (NL). For the past 5 three years he has been working as a motion designer at Studio Dumbar. He worked on projects such as DEMO Festival, D&AD, Utah Jazz and Spotify. Elvin’s passion lies in the fusion of diverse techniques to produce unique and captivating results. In addition to his work at Studio Dumbar, he engages in experiments with CGI and drawing machines.

Workshop info

In this two day workshop we will delve into the relationship between sound and motion. We’ll explore how sound can inspire and influence motion, and how motion can be utilised to create a more immersive and dynamic experience. You will learn to source your own sounds and use it to create visuals.

Requirements for Participants:

• Basic understanding of Adobe After Effects
• Laptops with Adobe After Effects pre-installed
• Recommended to bring headphones or earbuds for an optimal experience during the workshop

About Angela

Angela Kirkwood (she/her) is an illustrator and animator interested in experimenting with the endless possibilities of animation. She enjoys creating weird and wonderful topsy-turvy worlds filled with expressive characters, that inspire joy in the people that view them.

Learn to creatively unwind and use your voice to shape your characters and storytelling.

In this fun and definitely not serious workshop, attendee’s will work collaboratively to create and develop their own mascot. How the story unfolds for all these larger than life characters will be revealed on the final day!

No laptops needed! But make sure to bring a sketchbook and pens/pencil.

About Vera

Vera van de Seyp (she/her) is a computational designer and educator. Her work explores design systems, artificial intelligence, and inventing tools. She teaches and gives workshops and lectures to help makers learn to code and create their own design tools. Currently, Vera is a researcher in the Future Sketches group at MIT Media Lab.

Workshop info

In this two day workshop, we will explore creative coding as a medium for visual design. You will learn how to design and develop a generative (typo)graphic design system. We will play with design parameters and experiment with different levels of serendipity. Each participant will use their design system to create a series of animations.

Participants require:

• Basic understanding of web programming languages (HTML, CSS, Javascript)
• A laptop with Visual Studio Code installed (Copilot recommended)
• Sketching medium such as a notebook or software you’re comfortable sketching in.

Connor Campbell is a Scottish motion generalist based in London and creative director of experimental motion design practice CC Studio, working across brand identity systems, music videos and typography in motion for clients such as Warp Records, Apple and Sundance Film Festival.

Every motion brief begins with a period of loose experimentation where a piece of graphic design can be pushed to its limits without constraints. It is here, between the frames where we find interesting moments to expand on and push even further, with experimentation forming the basis for the final outcome – no test or draft is ever wasted.

This workshop will push graphic design into motion in unexpected ways, while embracing and celebrating experimental outputs as a key part of the process.

Basic knowledge of After Effects is required. Participants will require adobe creative suite and their own laptop.

About Heavyweight

Heavyweight is the symbolic name for common creative efforts in typeface design established in Prague in 2013. The founding members are Filip Matejicek and Jan Horcik. The name refers to the typographical description of a voluminous font style, its heavy weight. Primarily, however, it express the emphasis put on simplicity, precision of detail, and tasteful design, which can be used variably across graphic design applications. Its contemporary approach to typeface design goes hand in hand with respect for the discipline and its history. Delight in experiment is rooted in a knowledge of rules of typography. Authenticity is an integral prerequisite of the creative strategy, with our signature style being dosed such that the result is original, but still variable in use. In its brief life, Heavyweight has produced fonts that are used globally by institutions such as The New York Times, Walker Art Center, Whitney Museum etc., but also small independent publishing houses and start-ups. Heavyweight fonts are designed and technically crafted to be available for a comprehensive range of uses in print and on websites, in digital applications, broadcasting, etc.

About Bungo Sign Co

‘Bungo Sign Co’ is a hand painted sign and design studio shop in the south side of Glasgow founded by Scottish sign painters Rachel E Millar (she/her) and Hana Lindsay (she/they) in 2022. The collective specialises in hand painted signs, glass gilding and large scale typographic murals. They are the first woman owned public facing sign shop in the UK, and the only one in Scotland.

Our workshop is an introduction to the basics of signwriting. We will focus especially on adding 3D effects to your letters, we’ll cover how to draw and paint these.

You will each work on your own panel, you will draw up a letter of your choice with a 3D effect. You will then paint the design yourself and take it away with you!

About Habibis

Habibis is a brand and creative studio based in Edinburgh, working closely alongside family & friends with strong roots in skateboarding and art and design. Outputs are locally focused, via creating clothing, skateboard videos, mixes and unique products. Collaborating with local artists, designers and musicians, we have worked on merchandise, design and branding projects for a variety of clients including Carhartt WIP, Hyperdub and Focus, providing unique outcomes through print, motion design, photography and art direction.

A one-day workshop exploring a D.I.Y approach to creating a clothing brand. We’ll use the design process to develop initial ideas, before crafting a logo, manifesto and brand assets that reflect your own style and voice. Drawing on Habibis experience we’ll look at a range of analogue and digital techniques to create a personal brand from scratch – and share the tools and encouragement to make it a reality.

Together we’ll transform ideas into the basis for your own brand, from sketching logos and developing your story by creating mood boards, to developing graphics with your logo, preparing tech pack files, and creating a promo campaign. This will be followed by a screen-printing demo giving the chance to print your own t-shirts.

Participants will not only gain a DIY approach to creating their own brand, but they’ll also have a chance to work up all the assets and a campaign from their own individual style and voice. Hopefully this complete brand will reflect their own experiences and tastes, and they’ll gain further insight on how to grow the idea and bring it into real life, with file preparation for practical effects and techniques. They’ll also develop their skills in screen printing.

Founded in 2007 by Amy Whiten and Alistair Wyllie, Recoat started out as a unique gallery space in Glasgow, providing a platform for Contemporary Urban Art and Design in Scotland. 

For 6 years we curated projects and exhibitions, supporting and promoting Scottish artists and bringing inspirational artists here from all over the world. We wanted to make owning and experiencing art more accessible to more people while providing a service that is high quality, professional and fun.

Join Amy and Ali from Recoat for a hands-on workshop where you will explore and learn through discussions, collage, photography, painting and building to create a collaborative mural on the INTL site.

Recoat bring ideas, artists and funding together to create dynamic, socially engaged projects. They create large-scale paintings on buildings that are colourful, engaging and open to the viewers interpretation. They collect images from archives, artwork created in workshops with locals and imagery they make of the location and community. Orlando Lloyd is a graphic designer based in Glasgow, UK — working across cultural and commercial sectors, with a focus on visual identity, printed matter, publications and design for screen. He is co-founder of Fed & Watered, a studio specialising in food, drink and all things hospitality.

He is also a lecturer and educator, working with institutions such as Edinburgh College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Leeds Arts University, The Tetley Gallery and Edinburgh Science Festival.

About Rectangle

Rectangle is a graphic and interaction design studio founded by Daniel Powers and Lizzie Malcolm in 2017. Using both established and emergent technologies – their work is focused on building tools to structure stores of information, and interfaces to access them. Projects vary in scale, complexity and tone – allowing collaborations across fields with artists, human rights organisations, cultural organisations, journalists, publishers and academics.

Alongside this work Rectangle has had both permanent and visiting lecturing roles at art schools and universities in Europe and the US.

An archive is a collection of entries – from something small and personal like a folder of research images to something large and significant like documenting civilian harm in conflict.

In this workshop we will look at the power of structured information, learn some coding skills and develop digital research methods to build an archive.

We will explore how to design and build an interface in modern web technologies. Looking at common paradigms, we will aspire to go beyond a template design and create a dynamic and site-specific interface that makes sense in the context of your material.

You can bring a dataset that you have found or collected yourself, but we will also provide a set of sample material to work from if you prefer, this will be shared in advance of the workshop.

No prior coding experience is required. Please bring a laptop!

The workshop will be a beginners introduction to Touchdesigner. I will introduce the basic UI and features of the software for creating generative art with music

They will learn how to compose abstract graphical animations using noise patterns that respond to audio and midi inputs from ableton live. We will also go over manipulating external video and image inputs

By the end of the workshop we will have a generative audio reactive poster design that evolves organically over time and reacts to music

About Live Project

Work on a live project with mentorship and guidance from Scotland’s leading design agencies.

Work on a creative design-led challenge over 2 days with mentorship from some of the top design agencies in Scotland and have the opportunity to present to an internationally renowned panel of judges.

This is an opportunity to create a piece of personal work with industry level creative direction, meet like-minded people, develop your work and enjoy yourself!

The 20 participants who create the strongest projects will be offered work placements with their mentor agency. The top 3 selected by the jury will be rewarded with a design bundle and be awarded International Assembly Champions of 2024!

This year’s challenge will be set by The Brand Identity.

Jonathan Gilbride
Jonathan is a previous winner of the Live Project, and after winning went on to work at Warriors Studio, BOLD and is now designer at Brewdog. Alongside working in industry Jonathan is a visiting lecturer at design schools in Europe with Warriors Studio and has been a key speaker at various industry events.

Jack Renwick
Jack Renwick is a multi-award winning designer with a strong passion for ideas. She works closely with clients, getting to the heart of their problems and showing how creative thinking can be the way forward. Jack runs a creative branding agency, wittily titled Jack Renwick Studio, based in Whitechapel, London with designers who are more talented than her. She has worked on a huge variety of projects over the past 25 years for clients including Amnesty International, eBay, BBC, Nokia, Royal Mail, Sir Elton John and Stella McCartney and received recognition from most of the world’s most prestigious awards. Jack originates from Glasgow and is frequently sought out as an awards jury member for her ‘refreshingly frank’ views. She is a Fellow, a board member, an examiner, an advisor, a judge, a writer and a speaker and has received the epic honour of being selected as the D&AD President for 2023/24.
